"They did everything they could for my wee boy"

About: Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Accident & Emergency Royal Hospital for Children (Glasgow) / Urology (Ward 3C) University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as a parent/guardian),

My son had been unwell for a few days with what we thought was reflux. The dr gave medication but after a bad vomiting episode my son became extremely agitated by a pain in his groin.

After speaking to NHS24  we attended Hairmyres A+E. I was worried as I had previously waited long times in the department with little compassion shown, however the care my son received was second to none. The triage nurse showed real care and understanding towards my son, and Dr Reid was amazing with him, and made sure he was quickly referred to urologists at the sick kids hospital, which was the correct move as he has an appendix of the testes torsion. I want to thank them both for their speedy response and the care they showed my son.

We later attended the Hospital for sick kids. I was disappointed when they told me we had to wait in their a+e queue again after already waiting at Hairmyres. We only waited an hour, and it might not seem a lot, but by this point we were both exhausted. Once triaged though he was quickly put in a bed and surgeons were down swiftly. They explained everything in detail and made sure they did everything they could for my wee boy.

Thank you.

Dear pelicanjc57

Thank you for taking the time to feedback on your experience within A&E after your son became so unwell. A very distressing time for you and of course your son. I hope that he is now recovering well.

I will be delighted to share your positive comments with the A&E team, triage nurse and Dr Reid. They will appreciate you sharing your experience and will be reassured that you felt they provided a high standard of care.

I notice that on your last attendance you waited a long time and staff showed little compassion. My sincere apologies that you had such a negative experience previously.

As a parent the emotional stress of having an unwell child together with the physical impact, attending hospital and then transferring to the sick children’s must have indeed been exhausting. I hope that you too are recovering from this difficult time.

Thank you again for your comments.

I wish you all the very best

Lise
